It has been a long time since I have ridden a motorcycle, but I know the rules of the road and have a basic understanding of the differences between a motor scooter, bike, and motorcycle. I am a fan of the idea of a motorcycle, but the basic mechanics are much the same as a bicycle.
I’ve had the privelege of testing out many different bikes in the past and have come to the conclusion that a bicycle in terms of pure cycling enjoyment is far superior to a motorcycle. My problem with motorcycle riding is the controls, the maintenance, the lack of interest, and the general state of mind you must adopt to be a good motorcycle rider.
To me, motorcycles aren’t just a means of transport. I don’t care how great a motorcycle is when I’m driving or how much money I am spending on the trip, if I am not enjoying myself. Cycling is an activity where you only participate and nothing more. A bicycle is you and the road. There is no one around to be impressed by your expertise, there is no one around to make you feel guilty about your ignorance, and there is no one around who thinks that they are better than you. It is you and the road, and if you enjoy yourself then you have accomplished your goal.
As a cyclist, I enjoy the feeling of riding my bike, and I love being able to go wherever and whenever I want without giving it much thought. I don’t have to worry about what I am going to do when I ride, I don’t have to worry about how I am going to get to where I am going. I just do.
